Notice of 2016 Annual Elections

Nominations for 2016 Student Union positions opened on Monday 29th August at 10am and close on Monday 19th September at 5pm. Nomination forms are available here. Nomination forms can be lodged electronically or by appointment with the Returning Officer, Stephen Luntz. To contact the Returning Officer, email swinRO@abovequota.com.au or telephone 0438 667 787.

All elected Students’ Council and Media Committee positions are eligible to claim honoraria payments. Unless otherwise stated, all Higher Education and PAVE students who are Student Union financial members are eligible to nominate for positions. Unless otherwise stated on the ballot paper, all currently enrolled Swinburne students can vote in the election.

Candidates may choose to organise together under a common banner (ticket). Tickets are for the purpose of group identification only. Ticket registration forms will be provided to candidates. Ticket registration closes at 5pm on Wednesday 21st September.

Voting will be conducted between Monday 3rd October to Friday 7th October 2016. Polling will be open at the following times and places:

Electoral Conduct

70) No person shall in connection with any election;

  1. a) if running as an independent candidate, incur more than $2000 in 2013 dollars of monetary expenses for electioneering purposes. In elections conducted in years subsequent to 2013, this amount must be indexed to inflation. Only candidates may incur expenses. All receipts must be provided to the Returning Officer;
  2. b) engage in electioneering or display posters within six meters distance, clearly marked, from the polling booth as determined by the Returning Officer;
  3. c) record a vote which he or she is not entitled to record;
  4. d) remove a ballot paper from the immediate vicinity of a polling booth, unless with permission of the Returning Officer;
  5. e) interfere with any notice, except with the permission of the Returning Officer, which may be given if such notice infringes against this Schedule;
  6. f) interfere with any ballot paper, ballot box, sheet of election names, nomination, or other things relating to the election;
  7. g) engage in any dishonest, misleading or deceptive practice. Slander and defamation will be treated as extremely serious by the Returning Office;
  8. h) in any other manner impede or attempt to impede the proper conduct of an election;
  9. i) engage in any electioneering unless an enrolled student of Swinburne University of Technology;
  10. j) engage in any abusive or discriminatory behaviour towards any other person, whether involved in the election or otherwise;
  11. k) use any Swinburne Student Union resources for the purpose of any election not available for Swinburne students which would otherwise advantage, disadvantage themselves or others in the election.

71) No ticket shall in connection with any election incur, between all candidates of that ticket, more than $2000 in 2013 dollars of monetary expenses for electioneering purposes. In elections conducted in years subsequent to 2013, this amount must be indexed to inflation. Only candidates may incur expenses. All receipts must be provided to the Returning Officer.

72) No independent candidates and tickets are allowed to financially endorse or financially support other independent tickets or tickets.

73) If a student is employed by the Student Union and nominates as a candidate the student must cease employment for the entire election period even if they have been declared elected unopposed.

74) Candidates shall comply with any reasonable request or direction of the Returning Officer during the course of an election.

75) Election Material Notwithstanding the other provisions of this Part:

  1. a) Election material shall not be libellous or defamatory.
  2. b) Election material must not be produced in such a way as to cause confusion or so as to deliberately mislead voters into incorrectly attributing the material to any other individual, group or organisation.
  3. c) Election material must prominently identify the candidate or ticket for whom the material is produced.
  4. d) Authorisation
  5. i) All election material must, in addition to what is required by subclause 75 (c), include the words “Authorised by:” followed by the name of the candidate on whose behalf the material has been produced, their primary campus, the position for which they are running and their course of study.
  6. ii) Election material shall not be authorised by any individual other than the candidate for whom the material is produced, and must not be distributed on behalf of that candidate without their explicit knowledge and endorsement.

Barista/all-rounder wanted

Swinburne Student Union is looking for an experienced barista/all-rounder to join the team at our cafe at Swinburne University Croydon. This opportunity includes generous superannuation and a Monday to Friday business hours roster.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide excellent product quality and customer service to students and staff at Swinburne University Croydon
  2. Ensure a safe environment for staff and customers
  3. Other duties as required by the Café Manager

Key Selection Criteria

Essential:

  1. Experience as a barista
  2. Front of House hospitality experience
  3. Ability to work independently without direction
  4. Good communication skills

Desirable:

  1. Food Handling certification
  2. Experience as a cook/chef
  3. Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
  4. An appreciation of sustainable and ethical business practices
