Media Release: Swinburne Student Union condemns closure of Swinburne campuses

July 6th, 2012|Campaigns, News & Events|0 Comments

It was announced today by Swinburne University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Linda Kristjanson, that the University will be relocating courses from its Prahran campus, to its Hawthorn campus and eliminating the Lilydale campus completely.

The announcement came as a shock to students and to the Swinburne Student Union, neither of whom were consulted prior. No students were included in the decision making process, an oversight the Student Union is greatly disappointed by.

It is of particular concern that the Lilydale campus is expected to close within the next year, eliminating courses in at least thirteen vocational areas.
We are concerned that the interests of Swinburne students have not been taken in to account in either case and fear that the University has not considered implications such as proximity of housing, cost of transport and the already limited parking available.

Swinburne Student Union President, Mark Briers, has stated:
“The Swinburne Student Union is shocked at the decision and concerned that no students have been contacted or consulted prior to the announcements. We hope to work closely with the university on dealing with the consequences of today’s decision.”

SSU Exam Help Stall

June 6th, 2012|News & Events|0 Comments

This semester we trialled our new SSU Exam Help Stall at Melbourne Olympic Park, giving away free pens, pencils, erasers, water and moral support for all students. With the intention of relieving anxiety during a stressful time, the stall was a success with many students seeking out our table, not just for free goodies, but also for assistance. We would like to thank Melbourne Olympic Park and all the supervisors for being supportive of this great new service that we hope becomes a regular presence during the Swinburne exam period.
