What is the Student Union?

The Student Union is the only independent student organisation at Swinburne University, representing all Undergraduate, Postgraduate and TAFE students. We have a long and proud history at Swinburne University spanning over thirty years. From campaigns for free education to protests against racist attacks on international students, the Student Union has always been proactive in progressive campaigns both on campus and around the country.

Our main role continues to be the provision of a critical representative voice for the diverse student population and to ensure that student rights are maintained on campus and in the wider community. This is best achieved when large numbers of students get involved. So get more out of your time at Uni. Join your Student Union and get active!

Here are some of the issues that Swinburne Student Union will campaign around this year:
• Against University or government policies that impact
negatively on our education.
• For greater public funding of our education system – Low er HECS, Lower TAFE fees, Stop treating international students like cash-cows!
• For increased Youth Allowance – Students shouldn’t live in poverty!
• For international student rights! Stop the racist attacks on Indian students!
• For public transport concession cards for international and postgraduate students!
• Against war and for a free Palestine!
• For an end to the government’s homophobic laws!
• Plus much, much more!

As an affiliate member of the National Union of Students and the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations, the Swinburne Student Union has always been a strong and active part of the national student voice. We will continue to play a role in shaping student campaigns at a national level.
