March 14th, 2014|Campaigns|Comments Off on NUS National Day of Protest: Abbott & Pyne Hands Off our Education!

Time Wednesday, 26 March 2014 2:00pm

Where? Meeting at the Union BBQ at 12-1.30 then heading to the State Library for the rally at 2:00PM.
Christopher Pyne has tabled a bill in Parliament to cut 900 million dollars from higher education and another bill to cut Centrelink start-up scholarships, a vital lifeline for tens of thousands of students who already live below the poverty line. Media Release: Swinburne Student Union opposes cuts to Higher Education funding

April 18th, 2013|Campaigns, News & Events|Comments Off on Media Release: Swinburne Student Union opposes cuts to Higher Education funding

Swinburne Student Union has condemned the Labor Government’s $2.8 billion cuts to Higher Education. The Federal Government’s announcement has come less than a year after the 2012 Victorian State Government’s TAFE cuts, which led to the closure of Swinburne’s Lilydale and Prahran campuses.President of Swinburne Student Union, Caroline Baker has expressed grave concern for university students. “The Gonski reforms are important, but they should not be implemented at the expense of Higher Education”.

“Swinburne is set to lose an estimated $12 million in base funding. This is undoubtedly going to impact on the quality of education along with the delivery of services at Swinburne. With its poor record of student consultation, Swinburne students are very worried that this will lead to further unexpected course cuts and closures.”

“Swinburne students are sick and tired of funding cuts, course cuts and campus closures. We deserve better”, Ms. Baker said.

Swinburne Student Union will be hosting on campus actions as well as encouraging all students to participate in the nation-wide National Union of Students’ actions to ensure that all students receive the education they deserve.
