Hey all
Just had another SSU Council meeting and boy was it a long one. We endorsed the Same Sex Marriage campaign as well as the endorsement of the CAPA Anti-Racism day. We also voted to become affiliated with CAPA – the Council of Australian Post-Graduate Associations.
Of particular importance though was that the council unanimously agreed to the motion I put forward that we request the university to re-instate a Queer space. This is really great news and I will keep you all posted on my progress. My next step is to write up a formal proposal and if anybody has any ideas or thoughts they wish to put forward please feel free to contact me – amichell@swin.edu.au.
On an unrelated note the Melbourne Rainbow Band, in which I play the Clarinet, is advertising their up and coming concert titled “Australiana”. Shows will be held at Chapel off Chapel in Prahran on Saturday the 15th May 7:30pm and Sunday 16th May 1:30pm. It’s on Facebook and tickets available now at Chapel off Chapel or on 03 8290 7000.
Hope to see you all there and feel free to pull me aside and say hi.
Also, the inaugural concert of the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Youth Chorus, “The Sound of Youth,” is to be held at Gasworks Theatre on 17 April. Go check it out, they are young, gorgeous and can sing! You can purchase tickets to this special event ($15 general admission and $10 for under-12s), by visiting www.gasworks.org.au or by calling (03) 8606 4200.
Stay beautiful everybody and as always feel free to contact me if you have any concerns on campus or want me to chase up any issues you are having.

Heya all.
Last night was the Queer Swin Family AGM which I’m a member of and it went off really well. It was good to see heaps of people there supporting the club and also good to see so many people putting their hands up to help out. Awesome!
It goes without saying that my job and the activities of the club will go well together so I’ll be supporting them from a union perspective as much as I can.
Well done Michell and Will!
As part of the proceedings they raffled off three copies of the book “Closets are for Clothes” which is a history of Queer culture in Australia all the way back to colonial days. I was lucky enough to win a copy and am avidly reading it as you read this. I’ll be lending it out to people when I’m done just to spread the wealth so if you want to borrow it please feel free to contact me : amichell@swin.edu.au
Stay chillin people!

Hi all,
Tomorrow (Wednesday) is clubs day and I’ll be hanging around the atrium at Hawthorne with a few of the clubs I’m a member of, so if you want to come up and see me / ask me questions / chat / etc then feel free.
As queer rep I’d like to introduce you all to the Queer Swin Family club which have aims and goals the same as mine, and we will both be working side by side to address queer issues on campus together.
Also check out the dorks of the role playing club, and laugh at us at your peril! Seriously, I’m looking to start a DnD game some time soon……

Well 0-week has stepped off in full swing, and there was a large crowd today all jostling around looking for free stuff. The student Union was there trying desperately to get people to join up and become financial members. It’s really important for the survival of the union that we get as many people becoming financial members because it is the only source of income the union has, and without members the union will vanish. If that were to happen then it would mean the end of the only truly independent student representative body, separate from the university administration. The student union is there to stand up for your rights! I strongly encourage everybody to join up and help fight for student rights on and off campus.

Hi all, I’m Abby your queer rep on the Swinburne Student Union, and this is my new blog where I’ll be posting about general council things and more specifically queer issues on campus.
I’ll also be posting my progress on re-establishing a queer space here at hawthorn campus but that is just half the battle. I need your suggestions for what you are looking for for your queer space.
It also goes without saying that I will be open to any suggestions from anybody regarding campus life and queer issues in particular, so comment away or contact me directly (I’ll be posting my contact email address once I get one).
So stay tuned to this space!
